Dr. Retana was just 21 when he began teaching at West Mesa High School. His first year he started LUCHA, wrote the Bronze Stirrup, began a Chicano Studies curriculum, and began to develop the notion of a Chicano theater group. 1979-1980.

In 2001, Dr.Retana published this book. It sold over 40,000 copies. In the book he discussed the ASI Model for achieving student success.
Dr. Retana is a founding member of CALSA (California Latino Superintendents Association)
CALSA was recognized for providing mentorship and leadership to aspiring school leaders in 2006 by the California State Legislature. Dr. Retana was a founding member of CALSA. Activism never stops.
